I first came across this idea when I meet #chrisbrogan at the Agents of Change digital marketing conference last year.
The concept is an alternative new year’s resolution. Instead of saying I’m going to lose 30 pounds, you choose one word that embodies that change for you. Like “Fitness”. Then live that word for the year- how are you going to bring that word to life during the year.
Chris talks about it better here: http://www.chrisbrogan.com/my-3-words-2014/
When I first picked my three words for 2014 I had my business goals in mind. As I started to define how I would live these words throughout the year, I realized that they would also be playing a role in my personal life as well. The two are, after all, intertwined.
I’ve been working on mini goals and action steps to make these three words work for me this year. Sharing my words is one of these action steps. It will hold me accountable. Sharing my own three words might also spark you to come up with your own.
My Three Words for 2014
Focus to me means gaining clarity on the stuff that gets lost in the craziness of life. I am going to direct my new found focus on two main areas this year: my schedule and my business goals.
Focus on my schedule. I’ve always had a hard time with using most methods to manage my to-dos and tasks (I always tell clients that not all programs work for all people). I find a more flexible, time slot format works best for me. That being said, I’d like to tighten up my system to maximize my productivity better.
Focus on my business goals. I have had ideas of what my goals are in my head. For the most part, that has been were they’ve stayed. Not the best way to get them accomplished. This year I plan to really think through what I want my business to be and how I’m going to get it there.
I’m putting it to paper and making things happen.
I run my own business. I enjoy what I do. I’m good at what I do.
Now, I just need my brain to stop second guessing those points.
I began working on my mindset last year when I remodeled a spare room into my new office (more on this later). This was a great step toward making me feel like I have a “real” job.
This year I’ve started taking part in a few groups and training programs that will hopefully boost my confidence and get my mindset straight.
I can learn from others; I have learned things I can share with them as well.
This year, I’d like to work on making this happen. Best way is to participate — in forums, groups, and social media. I’m looking forward to getting to know folks and expanding my circle.
So, there they are. My 3 words for 2014, in writing and ready for action steps (some of which are already in place!).
