With a new year comes new goals and plans…and sometimes resolutions. But studies show that the success rate of resolutions is not good. I don’t want to make a statement knowing my success rate is only 8%! Plus, I’ve always gone a bit against the crowd anyway.
A few years ago I found Chris Brogan (if you don’t follow him, you should) and his concept of 3 words for the year. The idea is that rather than make general resolutions for the year, you choose three words you commit to living by for the year.
Once I tried it, I was hooked. Part of planning my year’s goals and big visions is coming up with my 3 words for the year. This helps keep my words aligned with my goals and keeps my action steps moving me in the direction I want to go. I keep my words on a board in my office and look at them daily, asking “What did I do today to live into my words”.
This will be my third year coming up with and living by my 3 words.
- In 2014: Focus/ Mindset. Participate.
- In 2015: Self. Positivity. Momentum.
This year I am building on my past year’s words. I will keep my past words in mind as I move forward into 2016.
My 3 Words for 2016:
The past two years have included words that have helped me created a better, more solid base to work from. This year I want to take it a step further and add building blocks to this base. The aim of my goals will be to build the next set of blocks, both personally and professionally.
When it comes to my own goals and projects I tend to get lost in the daily hustle of life/business. I tend to push my action steps to the bottom of the to-do list. To reach the growth I hope to this year I’m going to need to get better at this. I will need to take consistent action toward my goals.
Big one! I have plans for this year that summon my Gremlin (you know, that voice that says “you can’t do that”, “no one will care”, or “you’ll fail”). I am going to follow through with my plans in spite of my Gremlin.
Those are my words to live by in 2016. Whether you make resolutions or choose your 3 words, good luck with your 2016 goals and dreams!
